Product Description
A heartbroken young Texas journalist meets a beautiful French student on a train bound for Paris, and invites her to share his last night in Vienna.

Amazon.com
This romantic, witty, and ultimately poignant glimpse at two strangers (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) who share thoughts, affections, and past experiences during one 14-hour tryst in Vienna somehow remains writer/director Richard Linklater's (Dazed and Confused, Slacker) most overlooked gem. Delpy, a stunning, low-key Parisian, meets the stammering American Hawke, as the two share a Eurorail seat--she's starting school in Paris, he's finishing a vacation. Their mutual attraction leads to an awkward meeting (beautifully played by each performer), and Hawke suggests that Delpy spend his remaining 14 hours in Vienna with him.

Typically, this skeleton is as much plot as Linklater provides; as usual, he's more interested in concentrating his talents on observing the casual, playful conversations between his leads. His tight time frame allows the characters to say anything to one another, and topics ranging from politics to past romances to fears of the future flow with subtle finesse. The short time frame is also cruel, however, because beneath this love affair lies the painful reality that the two most likely will never see each other again and will be left only with memories--an idea Linklater drives home with an effective snapshot conclusion.

Hardly the trite Gen-X bitch session that many '90s films using this approach become, the film feels more like a Bresson or Rohmer piece, containing sharp perceptions--and flawed humans rather than stereotypes. The protagonists' frank revelations and heated exchanges flow in a stream-of-consciousness style, and its no accident that Linklater set the film in Vienna, where Freud invented and practiced psychotherapy. --Dave McCoy

5 out of 5 stars why this feels so otherworldly   August 14, 2010
C. CRADDOCK (Bakersfield)
Before Sunrise seemed like a European film by a European director, but it was actually the American Richard Linklater, the director of 1991's Slacker. I have seen one reviewer who said that Before Sunrise could therefore be called Shlakers. That seems a bit harsh, though, for a film this fresh and lovely. Filmed in Vienna, a very old and beautiful city, with plenty of long takes that allow the dialogue to unfold quite naturally, it tells a simple story of 2 young people who meet on a train. Ethan Hawke plays an American student, who goes by the name Jesse though his real name is James--and Julie Delpy is from Paris, like her character, Celine. Though the whole Ethan Hawke persona can sometimes wear on one's nerves, here he manages to be brash, but not impertinent. He is actually quite charming, and Julie Delpy is simply wonderful. They both act well with an extremely natural feel, like you are observing them on that train, and following them around Vienna. You can see that they are falling in love, but they have agreed that they won't pretend they'll ever see each other again. They will just have this one night together.

They go so well together, you start to become concerned. Maybe they should get together. Maybe this was fate, this is their only chance at true love. The movie ends on an ambiguous note which I don't want to spoil, but if you want to know what happens to them there is a sequel called Before Sunset that takes up with Julie and Ethan's characters 9 years later.

The film has numerous references to James Joyce's novel "Ulysses" and they both take place on June 16th, which is celebrated as "Bloomsday" named for main "Ulysses" character Leopold Bloom. Celine could be a literary allusion as well, to Louis-Ferdinand Céline, author of "Death on the Installment Plan" and "Journey to the End of the Night." Jesse quotes W.H. Auden at one point, and you wonder if he might become a writer himself some day. If he does, this chance encounter with Celine could no doubt provide some excellent material.

-------------
Celine: You know what I want?
Jesse: What?
Celine: To be kissed.
Jesse: Well I can do that.

Jesse: I feel like this is, uh, some dream world we're in, y'know.
Celine: Yeah, it's so weird. It's like our time together is just ours. It's our own creation. It must be like I'm in your dream, and you in mine, or something.
Jesse: And what's so cool is that this whole evening, all our time together, shouldn't officially be happening.
Celine: Yeah, I know. Maybe that's why this feels so otherworldly.

1 out of 5 stars None of my business but perhaps suitable for fans of Dawson's Creek and Felicity   May 8, 2010

Ethan Hawke was much more likable in Gattaca. I found his character unappealing especially his line delivery. Maybe he was supposed to sound earnest and young but he sounds full of **it. BUT this could be true love or a real connection for these two people just like in real life, people don't have to have public approval to be compatible with one another. So basically, this movie and the dialogue and the entire movie is their conversation is ... none of my business. I really don't agree with the heavy sustained hype over the decades about this movie. It's no Casablanca (and even Casablanca isn't for everyone.) This movie is not my cup of tea.

5 out of 5 stars Before Sunrise   March 16, 2010

Before Sunrise is a feel good romantic movie (aka "Chic Flick")that really delivers. I started watching it when there was nothing else to do and it quickly grew on me. The characters are impulsive but believable. The acting is crisp and straghtforward, and the entire experience was well worth the time I spent watching it.

Two young people, an American man and a French woman, meet on the train and agree to get off together for one romantic night in Vienna. Things seem to go their way as they make their way around town without speaking German. They eventually fall in love and agree to meet in six months time at the train station where they depart.

The viewer is caught up in the whirlwind romance that unfolds on the screen. The couple appears carefree at first, but deeper emotions emerge as they realize their only night together may be the last time they see each other. By the end of the movie the viewer is hoping that the director would fast forward six months to see if they do indeed return to their prearranged meeting spot. The film does not do this but the hope remains. At the very end the director returns to the various locations the couple visited to show how empty those places are now that our couple is gone.

This was one of the most charming films I've seen in recent months and the film deserves to win some kind of award.

This movie is perfect. Romance movies, are normally terrible, they are cheesy, unrealistic, and in no way show what relationships are really like. This movie, is nothing like that, it is quite possibly the best romance movie ever(its sequel being strong competition) and needs to be seen, not just by people who like love stories, but by people that hate love stories. If your a hopeless romantic, you will love this movie, if your a cynic when it comes too love you will love this movie for completely different reasons, but no matter who you are you will love this movie. A must buy.
